The man suspected of shooting his 6-year-old neighbor and her family after a basketball rolled onto his lawn was taken into custody on Thursday night.
Robert Louis Singletary, 24, was arrested in Hillsborough County, Florida after turning himself in on Thursday evening.
Police said Singletary was responsible for shooting at his 6-year-old neighbor, Kinsley White, after her basketball rolled onto his yard on Tuesday. He also shot at her parents, William White and Ashley Hildebrand, when they confronted him.
Kinsley was hospitalized after a bullet grazed her cheek, and had to have bullet fragments removed from her skin.
Her father was also hospitalized in critical condition after he was shot in the back. Her mother was also grazed by a bullet, and another neighbor shot at but not hit during the incident.
William White remains hospitalized with serious injuries, police said on Thursday.
Family members have since set up a GoFundMe campaign to support the victims, which has since raised over $40,000 for medical bills and therapy.
Singletary fled from his home before he could be arrested, leading Gaston County Police to start a manhunt with help from the US Marshals service.
But the suspect decided to turn himself in around 4.45pm on Thursday at the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida. According to authorities, he did not have any identification on him at the time.
Singletary was in the Tampa Bay area, nearly 600 miles from his home in Gastonia, North Carolina where the shootout took place.
He is currently being held at Falkenburg Road Jail in Tampa, Florida, according to Hillsborough County jail records.
Before the shooting on April 18, Singletary was recently arrested for a violent assault on his girlfriend with a ‘mini-sledgehammer,’ police said.
The assault reportedly took place on December 7, 2022. Singletary’s girlfriend reported feeling disoriented and bleeding from the back of the head after the attack, but the man refused to let her leave for medical treatment.
‘Singletary told her that she could not leave until she had cleaned up all the evidence from the assault,’ the Gaston County Police Department stated. ‘The victim complied with the Singletary’s demands and he allowed her to leave the apartment approximately two hours after the assault occurred.’
After she left, Singletary’s girlfriend drove to a hospital for treatment and reported the attack to the police.
He was arrested and charged with assault, but was released from jail on $250,000 bond.
