A serving police officer has been charged with raping a woman while on duty.

Sergeant David Stansbury, from Ilminster, in Somerset, is accused of raping a woman aged 16 years or over.

The charges relate to alleged incidents in Plymouth in 2009.

A report was made to Devon and Cornwall Police in September 2020, and he has been under investigation ever since.

The 42-year-old was an officer with the force between 2009 and 2011 and now serves with Hertfordshire Police.

Stansbury is currently suspended from duty, and is due to appear before Plymouth Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: ‘If you have any information that you feel may assist this investigation, please contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously by calling freephone 0800 555 111.’
